Top Entry-Level Exotic Bags: Beauty is Skin Deep

If you know anything about me, it’s that I love a good exotic bag. But I understand the hesitation, as well as the primal fear that can come with the prospect of the purchase. Through a lifetime of collecting bags, I also know the ones that have remained treasured through the years are the investment pieces in my exotic collection. Whether vintage or a boutique brand, they hold their worth in my wardrobe. The point is, you don’t have to spend your life savings (although this one is pretty tempting) in order to adore a precious piece.

Crocodile in a darker shade will appear the least reptilian but it’s pricy, while python in a natural tone will look the scaliest. The easiest for a starter exotic is elaphe, a watersnake. It’s smooth and easy on the budget but then again, it does not have staying power. It’s not as valuable so without proper maintenance, it will begin to dry out and tear. So, as you can see, this is a difficult list to compile but I’ve done my homework so you truly get the best of both worlds. Here are some gentler pieces that are less daunting, in price as well as appearance.

1. Jill Haber Jacob Chevron Elaphe-Over-Geo Elaphe: This is one is by far the smartest purchase. You get quality construction, Italian snakeskin, and classic versatility. The graphic chevron design is eye-catching and abstracts the snakeskin, so you get all the oomph without any of the eww. At Jill Haber for $695.

2. Nancy Gonzalez Mini Crocodile Flap-Top Shoulder Bag: When it comes to modern classics in crocodile, nobody beats Nancy Gonzalez. This little cream box will instantly upgrade anything you wear. At Bergdorf Goodman for $1,950.icon

3. Adriana Castro Anka Satchel in Python: For a full-size exotic bag that won’t break the bank, there is only Adriana Castro. She fully flaunts her love for all by keeping her prices low so everyone can be fabulous. The Anka satchel is as timeless as they come; this will be treasured for multiple generations. At Adriana Castro for $1,780.

4. Fendi Python Tube Wallet on a Chain: High-texture python makes for a high-impact exotic, which is why this miniaturized size is just right for one of your first big purchases. At Bergdorf Goodman for $1,400.

5. Khirma New York Babo Watersnake & Stingray Clutch: Consider this convertible clutch the one to start with. Neutral watersnake with a panel of stingray gives all the effect with none of the exorbitant price. At Saks Fifth Avenue for $795.
