Love her or hate her, there’s no denying Gwyneth Paltrow’s enviable complexion and that’s in no small part thanks to the actress’ love affair with Organic Avenue. So, I asked Jacquie Chamberlain, an NYC-based chef and culinary event coordinator, to share some easy-to-make juice recipes for glowing skin. Having studied at the Natural Gourmet Institute, she loves creating recipes using whole ingredients that both support the body’s optimal health, but also taste delicious.
Here are her two faves.
Green Goddess Smoothie:
2 cups spinach
2 cups kale
1/2 bunch mint, leaves taken off of the stem
1 cup water
1- 1″ piece ginger, peeled
3 stalks celery
1 apple, cored
1 pear, cored
1 lemon, rind and pith removed
1. Put the first 5 ingredients into a high speed blender. Blend until smooth, about 1 minute.
2. Add the rest of the ingredients and blend until the drink is perfectly smooth and incorporated. For an even smoother consistency, add half a ripe avocado.
Why this smoothie is great: spinach, kale and other greens are full of chlorophyll, a powerhouse of nutrients. Ginger and lemon: While acidic in taste, lemon is very cleansing and alkaline to the body. It strengthens the immune system, keeping your skin and hair shiny while you’re on the go. Ginger aids with digestion and soothes the stomach, which will be helpful when nerves are high. Apple: A good source of fiber with pectin that keeps digestion on point. This is the perfect way to get your apple a day. Pear: Pear are very hydrating. Hydration and even digestion are key for glowing skin, so like apples, pears are a good, low-sugar sweetener for this smoothie.
“I Can’t Believe it’s Healthy” Milkshake
3/4- 1 cup almond milk
3/4- 1 cup coconut water
1/2 cup frozen coconut meat or 1 frozen banana
1 avocado
3-4 dates, softened
1/4 cup cacao powder
2 tablespoons carob powder
1 tablespoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1. Add all ingredients into a high speed blender and blend until smooth. It might take a minute or two to break up the dates and the avocado smooth.
2. Add more or less almond milk and coconut water to make it the consistency you’d prefer.
Why this smoothie is great: Coconut water has more potassium than a banana, coconut water is extremely hydrating and supports a busy schedule. Coconut meat and avocado: Two great sources of fiber and healthy fats that keep the body working at it’s optimal point while keeping skin supple and smooth. Cacao powder: A host of protein, beta-carotene and antioxidants, raw cacao powder contains high amounts of calcium, zinc, iron, copper, sulfur and potassium as well. Dates: A good source of fiber and energy, dates help sweeten this drink without adding sugar.
