About Nancy Gonzalez

Nancy Gonzalez, eponymous with vibrant color and luxurious textures, is among the most celebrated designers in the world, having built a brand on passion and conviction – and the need for a creative outlet. “I was looking to do something that made me feel complete in which I could explore and develop my skills as an artist…”

A petite, soft-spoken woman with the utmost conviction and unfathomable determination, Gonzalez knows firsthand what it takes to succeed. As a mother of two, she made the almost unsounded choice for a Colombian woman to go into business for herself, and set about into a career with little support besides that of her own. She is a driving force for social change, employing almost entirely women and providing daycare for their children, she strives to break the cycle of poverty; creating beauty and instilling hope – all in the shape of a handbag.

“I don’t think anybody needs a bag, but we all need joyful experiences, something that makes us smile, a color, the texture of a material, a detail, a surprise”, says Gonzalez. A handbag is a hint of who you are and what you value, because it is a choice. A bag is a reflection of personal style – not necessarily changing the way a woman feels but rather transmitting that inner feeling to the outside.

Held on par with the top fashion houses, she stands at the helm of the company and all that bears her namesake, pressing forward with fervent success. The Colombian-born designer began selling in U.S. in 1997, debuting her first-ever, seven-piece collection at Bergdorf Goodman. Today her extensive line of woven clutches, weekenders, satchels, and hobo bags – some one hundred fifty designs in over two hundred colors – are practically a flagship to the luxury store. “Nancy Gonzalez is a trendsetter,” says Robert Burke, former Vice President of Fashion at Bergdorf Goodman. “The silhouettes, the colors and the mix of unconventional fabrics are unmistakable.”

The collection of designs and materials reflect her personal style as well as that which inspires her. Having spent her life in Colombia, she is as much addicted to the culture as she is to the climate, and the color. “The 365 days a year of brilliant blue sky, the incredible plumage of birds, a green like nothing I have seen anywhere else – that is the beauty of Colombia,” says Gonzalez.

“Nature is my best accomplice and my source of inspiration is life.” She is not afraid to venture into the unknown in her designs. “I always try to push the limits of what can be done with exotic skin”, says the designer. “Being happy is an act of discipline”, she relays in her inarguable wisdom. Then carries on making magic with her handbags.

  1. I’ve been waiting for a shoulder bag from her, all the bags I see now are the type you carry on your arm. I have to have a long enough strap to throw over my shoulder when I’m shopping to free up my hands. If you get a chance can you ask about this? I would like to see shoulder bags/hobos.

  2. Anita, I ordered a shoulder tote from her recently!

For spring, you will find many options with shoulder straps. It is also the most youthful collection she’s done!
