Walk into Mark Garrison’s namesake Manhattan salon and you just might see one of his many celebrity clients, which include Scarlett Johansson, Ashley Judd and Sandra Bullock. The affable hair expert clearly knows a thing or two about styling-discerning clients with lofty expectations and even loftier standards, and that’s why he’s the perfect person to ask about how we can best avoid heat styling products when the temperatures rise.
“Summer is time to let your hair have a rest,” says Garrison. “Back off of irons and blow dryers, and any other direct heat to the hair; let the natural heat of the day style your hair.” Here are his expert tips!
1) Start with a great haircut because a great haircut left natural will fall into place perfectly and the texture can be managed easily with a leave-in styling product, whether it be a cream, serum, oil, soft-hold mousse, curl texturizer, or even gel or pomade if hair is a bit shorter.
2) For straight to slightly wavy hair, simply twist strands into a chignon bun with some soft-hold gel and/or cream, then let the hair down at the end of day to create waves.
3) If hair is curly, twist sections to form spiral curls throughout the head with a cream and/or gel added for control. This is done by taking sections that are 1″ x 1″ and twirling the sections around your fingers. Do this after you’ve established where your hair is going to be parted and run product evenly throughout the towel-dried hair. Use little butterfly clips to twist locks and pull them away from the face, and also to pull them up in the front for a little volume. Afterwards, dry tousle the hair with fingers.
4) A braid is the easiest styling opportunity to take advantage of, especially if you have longer hair (one braid to the side or down the back, or two braids on each side). Do this with a center or side part. French braids make for great waves when you take out the plaits.
I had been looking for a post like this for a long time. My hair gets very weird if they are not styled properly with a straightener, but the weather right now is so hot, I hate using it. I am going to try the tricks mentioned here.
