Essential Questions to Ask When Buying a Bag

Essential Questions to Ask When Buying a Bag

There are always endless bag options out there, and each season, there are more temptations to make the decision even harder. So how do you choose which bag to buy? And how do you determine if the one you’ve fallen for is really the right bag and worthy of the investment? I have broken down the decision-making process into seven simple questions you ought to ask yourself. It’s like Match.com for bags (but much less painful!). By the time you’ve answered all of these, the decision will be clear and you’ll have your answer.

1. What occasions will this bag be used for? What purpose does it serve?
This is the most important question to ask. No surprise it’s also the one we have been asked the most often. This is why we originally came up with the concept of the 5 Essential bags: Tote, Treasure, Travel, Trendy, and Clutch. Each of these serves a distinct purpose and collectively, they ensure your bag wardrobe will work for every aspect of your life. Rather than accidentally collecting big totes or super-trendy bags, you want to make sure you have at least one of each, allowing more options when it comes to totes (they tend to be used the most) and clutches (because they require more specificity than other bags).

2. Will it fit all of my stuff?
When you’re sitting at home in a sterile environment with no temptations in front of you, this question seems obvious. Why would you possibly consider buying a bag that can’t accommodate all your stuff? Let’s say you’re a lawyer and always have a ton of files to carry, but you see a cute mini crossbody bag in your favorite color AND it’s on sale! It’s so adorable, how can you not walk out with it? Who cares that you don’t own any totes big enough for your work necessities and always end up using a shopping bag instead? You need and want this tiny pal at your side, and you’ll figure out the rest. Except “figuring out the rest” is so not worth the stress that comes with it.

3. Does it function to my tolerance level?
I’m talking about complicated closures, strap features, whether or not it’s a top handle, strap length (and its adjustability), the amount of zippers, the number of pockets (Too many? Too few?). Will the way the bag actually functions, rather than how you wish it would function, annoy you and cause inconvenience? Some people don’t mind having a top handle bag that required two hands to open and close. Just be honest with yourself: if you had to do that on a busy day when you’re running late and have a million errands, will you want to toss that bag over a cliff?

4. Do I already have a similar bag?
Are all your bags black or brown? Is the one in front of you black or brown? This relates back to question one, but it’s more specific. So you already have three bucket bags. Yes, it’s a trendy style that’s beloved right now, but do you need yet another?

5. Will the color correspond to the part of my wardrobe I would wear the bag with?
If you’re buying a tote for work, think about which color comprises the majority of your work wardrobe. Will the tote enhance and compliment or will it eternally sit in the back of your closet? Even if the current hot color is red, if it doesn’t work with the clothes you want to wear that bag with, then you already know the answer.

6. Does it fit my budget?
You already know this answer as well, but really work it out in a realistic way. What are you giving up in order to buy it? Be honest and responsible. If budget is not a concern, skip to #7.

7. If I walk away now, will I be thinking about it for days or weeks to come?
If you can’t answer, ask your SA to hold it. Or just keep it in your shopping cart or wish list. You will know by tomorrow; it won’t take a week.
