We’re used to seeing Alaïa bags of the big, top-handle tote variety (not that I’m complaining), so it’s refreshing to see this convenient shoulder-to-crossbody style. The Arabesque is an incredibly handy bag that will get used to death. It features dual compartments, so the front and back are essentially equal – the only difference is one of the pockets comes with a detachable vanity mirror – and it even converts to a clutch perfectly, extending the versatility by endless measures.
I’m glad it’s in deep, striking red. A bag like this deserves to be in a bright claret color, rather than an everyday black or tan. Think about it: all this function in black, and suddenly the result is something way more mundane. Besides, this is the easiest shade of red to wear. Bold primary reds are super-specific, while this tone is warm, subdued, and, in fact, pairs well with both brights and darks. And especially simplistic neutrals; a somber outfit absolutely requires a chic pop like this. Alaïa Arabesque on NET-A-PORTER for $2,890.
Pair with: Your functional bag is anything but basic. Prove that neutrals don’t have to be dull either with Vince’s sleeveless suede shift dress in earthy moss green. On Shopbop for $895.
