WRTMLN WTR: Watermelon Water – Why You Should Be Drinking It

I’m newly obsessed with nail art and coincidentally I was sent a few samples of WRTMLN WTR, a new line of watermelon water, at the same time that my index finger was painted to look like a watermelon. It was clearly a love affair meant to be! Overall I’m not big on juices…they’re mostly empty calories of sugar with no fiber (read more here about why blended smoothies are better than juices). Ditto for coconut water whose benefits have been grossly exaggerated (just read this NYTimes article). WTRMLN WTR, while still a juice and therefore something that should be enjoyed in moderation (it has 12 grams of sugar and 70 calories per serving), is a refreshing alternative to water, while also being an effective post-workout recovery drink and it has more amino acids and electrolytes than coconut water. While many companies are doing cold pressed watermelon juice right now, this is the only brand offering pure, all natural, unheated, no additives watermelon juice. Now back to the point about it being a good recovery drink. In a study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, researchers monitored seven athletes after intense exercise. Athletes were given watermelon juice, enriched watermelon juice or a placebo drink before each of their workouts. On the days they drank watermelon juice, the athletes reported being considerably less sore. The scientists attribute their findings to an amino acid called L-citrulline, which is thought to improve athletic performance by helping to get more oxygen to muscles, allowing them to repair themselves faster.

If you’re wondering about the taste, given that it has no additives, well…it tastes exactly like you’d expect fresh watermelon juice to taste! Curious? There’s no better time than now to get your butt kicked at the gym and then enjoy a cold juice. If you’re in the NYC area, the brand just opened their first retail location in Soho.
