In keeping with the sportswear trend that continues to be strong on the runway (Charlotte Ronson gave her models Tevas to wear!), a good chunk of the designers this season opted to have their models styled with low ponytails. While some went for sleek and sophisticated looks like Jason Wu, others went for something a bit more adventurous like Katie Gallagher. Here’s a look at some of the most memorable:
Katie Gallagher showed one of the season’s most unique takes on the pony. She went in a textured direction. The key product to get the undone beachy look was TIGI Catwalk Session Series Transforming Dry Shampoo and for a finishing touch a veil was used to cover the models’ faces and ponytails. Veil aside this is a look I love for “real life” especially using hair to cover the elastic holding the ponytail in place.
Inspired by sneakers for Spring 2015, Alexander Wang opted for a sporty, low ponytail to complement his collection. What made it unique was its high gloss finish. The idea was, according to Guido Palau, to create a more extreme and sophisticated take on “gym hair.” The key Redken product he used was Hardwear Gel. While this worked beautifully on the runway, I for one will be keeping my “gym hair” for the gym!
Odile Gilbert for Kérastase Paris headed up the hair team at Jason Wu where she crafted this effortlessly glam, side-part, low ponytail. This is a wonderful look to go for when you want to impress without looking like you’ve spend forever getting ready, which for most of us is very often so I wanted to go more in-depth into how to get the specific look. It can be quickly achieved using very few products. First Odile applied Mousse Bouffante and Ciment Thermique onto dry hair. Then, with a paddle brush, she blow dried hair in a backwards motion for volume. Next using a tail comb she created a side part. She left two-inch strips of hair on either side of the face and pulled back the remaining hair, securing it temporarily with a clip. Then, pulling hair from the clip, section by section, Laque Dentelle was sprayed and hair was twisted with fingers before being curling around a 2” barrel curling iron for added texture. After that, she collected the two front strips and pulled them with the remaining length at the back of the head into a pony, securing at the nape of the neck with an elastic. Baume Double Je was applied as a finishing touch to prevent fly-aways and secure hair in place.
