I don’t say this about too many designers, but I love it when Bottega Veneta gets complicated. Well, maybe complicated isn’t quite the right word. Tomas Maier is too smart for that; with him and his creations, it comes down to complexity. The deceptively complex effects of Bottega’s bags are thanks, in part, to the fact that he really knows how to show restraint.
This front-flap shoulder style is a perfect example of a well-executed bag that packs the element of surprise. It’s not just the way the flap is shaped, curvy and full of life and personality, or the way the smooth trim complements the signature intrecciato. It’s that lifted tab (which serves as the closure portion of the bag) that gives the style the drastic facelift it needed to make the classic flap seem brand-new and oh, so original.
