In a world dominated by seriously fashionable, but often serious-minded handbags — think your classic leather with metal accents — JumpFromPaper bags look more like images ripped from a coloring book, albeit a flawlessly colored-in one. Taipei designers Rika Lin and Chay Su attempt to create the optical illusion that their creations are two-dimensional, and they are successful: it is impossible not to do a double take when first laying eyes on these bright and cartoonish bags.
Lin and Su created their quirky designs after sketching their dream bags, and their drawings literally came to life. These pieces are 100% real and usable, and are made from a canvas-like polyester material. They feature bold colors, simple geometric shapes and thick black lines in order to achieve their cartoonish looks. The designers hope that their bags will allow people to think outside the box and have fun with fashion. Their company’s mission is to “encourage people to discover their whimsical personality, and for their imagination to go wild,” and it is easy to see this becoming a reality. Embracing one’s playful side does not seem a difficult feat to accomplish when swinging around a bright pink and yellow satchel called the “Giggle.”
JumpFromPaper, which Lin and Su created in 2010, now has multiple, adorable handbag collections with equally adorable names like Time Machine and Wanderlust. These are sold in 25 different countries and on jumpfrompaper.com. Better yet, the bags are inexpensive: they are generally priced from $40-$200.
