The best part about outfits consisting of clean blocks of color and crisp, graphic prints: they really leave room to have fun with your bag. Marni was thinking about firmness and sparseness for Spring ’13, calling the collection a “weightless exploration of volume.” The feel is genuinely modern and less about whimsy than previous shows, but, of course, that trademark sense of Marni quirk is still in tact. It’s about spontaneity, but not in the obvious sense. So what to wear with oversized, boxy button-downs and full, blown-out skirts?
Just look at the bags: strongly structured, hearty rectangular silhouettes that hang with purpose from their straps and handles. Better yet, they force you to take in the patterns and texture. And in the case of their amazing graphic lattice, the combination of pattern and texture. Checkered prints are all good fun, and so is bold geometry constructed from combos of leather and PVC, but what I really love: their new shoulder style, and more specifically, the chunky hardware it features. It’s all very Marni, but more so, it’s very fresh and exciting. Looks like my savings will take a major ding come spring, when these hit the stores and leave on my arm.
