From last year’s safari-chic and on to back-to-school cool, you can always count on Michael Kors to dish out a great big slice of Americana come NYFW. Everyone is turning preppy this season! These basics burst to life, right off the bat courtesy of a stripy first look, with simple geometry, optically intriguing prints, and a flare for all that’s graphic. Oversized lab glasses may have set an (ironic) science-lab tone, but the eyewear wasn’t the only surprise. Of course, Michael will never stray from his perfect tailoring and great silhouettes, but he also had a few tricks up his sleeve. The cute, structural satchel looks like an old-school lunch box – the kind that has a rounded top for your thermos. Chunky white belts, all-the-way unzipped skirts (hello, there!), and funky contrasting collars made for a sense of after-school play, and I love the shimmering-water and perfect summer-sky prints.
Sharp stripes, even sharper trench coats, smooth bodysuits, and smart jackets designed for every age are sure to fill the void in your wardrobe for seasons to come. Kors has his vision down so pat, he doesn’t need to consider trends (unless, after Marc Jacobs’ line-laden show, you now consider stripes to be a trend). Whatever he does, whether it’s a cheeky-sweet spring suit or revealing one-piece swimsuit; whether grommets, stripes, or photo-surreal prints cover the dress; whether it’s sixties-mod (the checkered portion of the collection is totally retro, as are all the hip-hugging, A-line skirts) or nineties-form-fitting, Kors is true to himself – and we love him for it! Even his take on the traditional Mondrian dress is a fluid one. The finish took us straight into night; a trio of super-sexy, cunningly cutout black looks satisfied the need for a sleek showstopper…or three.
