Roy Lichtenstein would be proud. While his Ben Day-dotted, comic book-inspired, super-distressed Drowning Girl has been appropriated in clothing time and again, 3.1 Phillip Lim’s showing packs the same kind of graphic punch as the original painting. Fashion and art seem to almost always be intertwined, from watercolor brush-stroke patterns to Mondrian-esque shift dresses.
First, countless renditions of the Pashli and now this: Lim has made a big leap in time for mid-summer. With a gutsy spirit similar to that of Prada’s Americana-laden Spring collection, this is Pop Art hitting your bag with a great big pow! Clear PVC trimmed in cartoon-like patent leather (with primary colors, to boot) doesn’t make for a practical purchase. But it is kind of fun. Wear it with a coy wink, and let your bag show all the emotion.
