It’s been multiple seasons since Balmain hit their stride in the realm of opulent mini-dresses and sex-bomb hip-huggers. But their bags can be hit or miss; and even though it depresses me to say it, what’s “missing” is usually the issue. Not in this case! Olivier Rousteing’s first collection for the house boasts a clutch that deserves the rest of the current Balmain wardrobe, which blends “the tailoring of Mexico and the glamour of Las Vegas.” Mission accomplished.
The super-graphic and stark Baroque print – an instant attention-grabber – transcends location. It exudes Latin-rustic as much as it does ostentatious Americana, yet it manages to ooze sophistication at the same time. Just make sure you let this clutch stand out. Don’t wear it with matchy-matchy black and white. Be as unexpected as Balmain! Think of surprising references, irreverent colors, and a contrast of old and new. Whatever you do, keep it young. Even as the years pass, if you style this right, this is an amazing piece to pull out time and time again, one that’s especially solid when it is seemingly out of fashion. There’s nothing more unexpected than turning trends on their head! On Ssense for $2,300.
Pair with: Show that pastels can look dangerous with the right bag. Versus’ minty patent-leather and mesh slingbacks are youthfully demure yet delightfully naughty. On Net-a-Porter for $695.
Unfortunately, I’m just not moved by this bag. I would pass for sure.
