It’s all relative. This bag is slightly interesting, but the only reason I’m looking is because it’s different for Balenciaga. Which is actually saying a lot – last year’s tube clutch showed me the brand is getting back on track (or rather away from that motorcycle hardware they’ve been so attached to), and this shoulder style proves they’re headed in a new direction.
With smooth leather, it’s the hardware-accented strap on the body of the bag that’s intriguing. Setting off the belt-style shoulder bits, this addition is more of a “trim” than a “strap,” but you could use it as a hand-strap if you really wanted to. The refined leather really is quite delicious, and the fluidly folded pleats at the gusset make for a beautifully subtle touch.
For snobs who just can’t get away from the basic black bag, at least Balenciaga’s latest development isn’t totally basic. At Exclusively at Barneys New York for $1,645.
Pair with: Play around with more mixed metals. The mélange of hardware (a gold heel and snakelike silver anklet) on Lanvin’s peach sandal will bring out the embellishments on the bag. On Ssense for $1,150.
