When it comes to working out I’m kind of a cardio addict, but I know that fitness is all about a balance and exclusively taking spin classes isn’t a good idea for anyone. It’s important to do both cardio and weight/resistance training and to that end I try to get to Physique 57 as often as I can (unfortunately until they open up closer to my apartment I’m sad to say it doesn’t happen often enough!). The studio is insanely popular here in NYC and they have a number of locations (as well as ones in the Hamptons and Los Angeles), and, from what I hear from people who have seen advanced screenings of Brad Goreski’s new Bravo reality show, the dapper stylist spends a good chunk of his day at Physique! In case you happen to live in L.A. and need motivation…who wouldn’t want to workout next to Brad? Can’t wait to see what his gym outfits look like! If you don’t live near a Physique location however or don’t feel comfortable stepping into a fitness studio just yet, they’ve come out with their first book, The Physique 57 Solution
The book outlines what exactly the 57 minute workout entails (interval training, isometric exercises, and orthopedic stretches), and then outlines moves to sculpt our various body parts (plus suggestions for warming-up and cooling down), before outlining two of Physique’s classic workouts. The book caps with some healthful recipes. There are plenty of exercises you can do with just your own body weight, but some do require a ball, a chair, or weights and I would highly recommend a mat!
The book officially launches next month (you can pre-order it now), but I was sent a review copy and while it’s pretty difficult to follow a workout outlined in a book (nothing can compare to going to class where someone is watching your form; Physique also has a line of DVDs), if you’re traveling and could use some inspiration as to what to do when you’re trying to sneak in a workout or if you’re out of shape and wary about going to the gym, the book is a fantastic way to familiarize yourself with some moves. Plus, while I don’t cook, the recipes include a number that seem simple enough if you’re looking for some healthy ideas. The book also includes useful tips for leading a more healthy lifestyle.
