I get it, Balenciaga. This is what you do, this is what you’ve done for years (among many other fabulous, lust-worthy, snob-approved creations, of course!). What makes the Arena a.k.a. the brand’s famous – and at times, infamous – motorcycle-style bag what it is? Aside from extra-long leather zipper pulls, it is, of course, those definitive touches of metal hardware on leather panels. Along with a whip-stitched handles, those buckles and rivets are what made you spot the Arena a mile away. And you know you spotted a whole lot of them over more seasons than I can count.
I love a good cuff as much as the next girl. It’s the accessory that can switch your outfit from frump to fierce in seconds flat. But unlike Givenchy’s leather cuffs, which also apply elements of their unmistakable bag hardware, the Arena Classic bracelet looks like it actually belongs on the satchel. As if you got weary of your old bag, took it to your best leather repair guy, and said, “Fashion me a bracelet!” One of the reasons I adore fashion is because what goes around comes around, but I think some things should be left in their rightful place.
What do you think? Snob or slob? At Barneys New York for $215 (for textured hardware) and $195 (for smooth hardware).
