Style Snob: Ranch Dressing

Denim on denim. Once a major fashion faux pas, now thoroughly de rigueur! How to make the two-timing look work without looking like your wearing an ill-conceived suit made my Levi Strauss himself? Two main notions need to be taken into consideration. You never want to wear double denim in the same shade, so be sure it’s light versus dark (a bleached-out shirt tends to look better, with the dark wash on the bottom, as it’s generally more aesthetically pleasing). Secondly, have a sense of humor about it and take on the spirit of a tailored ranch look – one that’s gone totally city. No cattle-herding for this girl!

Stella McCartney‘s ultra light-blue jean shirt has a feminine cut so it’s not too boxy (and it’s on sale!) – the perfect shirt to wear under a boxy yet shrunken wool blazer, which is a key element. Black Fleece‘s gorgeous tartan makes pale denim autumn-appropriate and adds a heaping dose of polish. Without the jacket, it would be blue and cotton and country all over. Deep indigo jeans in a classic silhouette – severely boot-cut and mid-rise – are the way to go. Normally, I wouldn’t spring for the same design on foot and at hand, but Chloé has gotten the glamorous ranch-hand vibe down pat this season. Flaunt the lovely distressed wood of their buckled booties when it peaks out from below your jeans, and play up the Western look with a sleek-ified saddle bag.
