The McQueen skull clutch has gone through every incarnation known to man. From the latticed Cathedral to the opulent Chained Dagger to the whip-stitched Union Jack Britannia, we’ve seen it all. Or so I thought. This latest variation has to be one of the better conceived. Textural black and white is right on par with what we’ve been seeing lately. True, this season, bouclé is about as predictable as the cold weather, but in typically unconventional Alexander McQueen fashion, they have added an unexpected and twisted touch: a purposefully open zipper, bordered by patent leather. There is something so seductive and provocative about it. Like an attractive woman beginning to undress, it makes you feel like you’re seeing something you’re maybe not supposed to. The trademark skull never hurts when it comes to amping up the raciness level, and cold silver with scattered crystal accents is a steely juxtaposition to distressed fabric.
And even though all-out Chanel tweed is what you might think of, don’t go there. A clutch as risqué as this requires a full-on edgy outfit. Let the wool bouclé stand on its own – if you wear something that is designed to compete, your centerpiece will get drowned out. And that would be too unfortunate! You know this is one of those amazing pieces that those in the know will be clambering over. On Ssense for $1,375.
Pair with: That doesn’t mean you can’t get equally racy with your choice of shoe. Bring some high-shine into the equation with Jimmy Choo’s snake-effect pumps, metallic fuchsia with touches of lace. And 10% of the proceeds go to the Jimmy Choo Foundation to support women’s charities. On Net-a-Porter $1,295.
