Givenchy “Nightingale” Messenger Hobo: None the Worse for Wear

givenchy_nightingale_messenger_hobo.jpg

So it looks nothing like the original “Nightingale” (unless I’m seriously missing something here), but who cares? I love it! And I suppose it does have similar logo tooling at the handles, though far more discreet than its showier sister. A big messenger will always have a place in my closet – even when it will be joining more than a few others! – because when you’re going to carry a bunch of stuff, you need the support of cross-body straps.

Givenchy‘s done it right with this smooth leather hobo. Anyone who carries it more than a few times will appreciate the fact that the messenger straps are adjustable and removable, converting it to a shoulder bag with bohemian-chicness. Just be aware that the bag is super-long, so the straps are extra-short; hanging from your shoulder, the top of the bag hits mid-torso (of course, this depends on your height, but this applies to the “average” girl). Black, rather than softer brown, would have looked too severe and possibly a little menacing. Plus, silky leather like this is meant to slouch when weighted – a bag that’s designed to get worn, and will only improve with wear and age. At Barneys New York for $1,240.

Pair with: Sometimes when you’re out all day running errands you want some incognito coverage that will also shield you from the sun. Enter Eugenia Kim‘s floppy sunhat, which will play up the bag’s romantically bohemian side. Eugenia Kim “Honey 10” Sunhat, $225.

  1. I just can’t get into these bags that have multiple ways of wearing them. One or more of the ways always looks off. In this pic, the bag looks tool long, like it has been stretched out or something. I’d rather have a piece that can be worn one way, but looks perfect and fabulous.

  2. I had actually bought this but had to return it as after i tried it at home it felt too deep when its carried the way it is shown in the picture. it was very difficult to reach for my stuff. Also as a crossbody bag the foldover made it kinda troublesome to open. overall while i love the idea it is actually quite a impractical bag. There is the newer nightingale shopper which looks nicer..
