Michael Kors Top-Handle Satchel: Typical with a Twist

michael_kors_top_handle_satchel.jpg

Glance at this bag head-on and it looks like a typical satchel reminiscent of a doctor’s bag. Stare a moment longer – and you probably would – and you’re struck by the side pockets that flair out, for a cool shape and interesting profile. These pocket protrusions break up that super-structured body and make Michael Kors‘ ladylike bag just a tad rebellious.

The wide opening does have a downside and that’s in the closure. You have to be okay with leaving it open most of the time; the zipper comes apart completely, so in order to close it you have to attach the zippers, for a tricky open-and-shut. It’s often the more conservative-looking bags that require the easy-going owners! It comes in two colors, “elephant” and “teak,” but the almost metallic “elephant” gray grants the silhouette way more depth – and it’s radically more youthful than its brunette counterpart. At Saks Fifth Avenue for $795.

Pair with: A deceptively classic shoe, like Alexandre Birman’s python pump with built-in platform and a toe that strikes the balance between pointy and round. Alexandre Birman Python Platform Pump, $550.

  1. Not to be rude or anything but I would have a really hard time paying $795 for this purse. I realize the high price tag is because it is a Michael Kors brand but I have heard so many negative reviews of his latest handbag line that I can safely say I am not alone in my hesitancy. In all honesty, I don’t actually even like the bag at all. Now, I understand that everyone is different and this is only my opinion, but the trends for this spring/summer are leaning more towards bright, bold colors and animal prints so I’m just not sure where he is coming from with this purse. And the 2 color choices, Elephant and Teak????? I will say no more.

  2. I am not really into structured bags, but I do like this one. I like the color featured as well. It does tend to be less adventurous, but sometimes that is needed. If I did wear this, it would be with a suit and a crazy printed scarf for something unexpected.

  3. This bag is actually very nice IRL….it looks more expensive than it is. Although bright colors are one of the trends for summer….neutrals is another…this bag fits right in.

  4. This is the first MK bag that’s really caught my eye since his original ID Chain Satchel. I love the clean lines and the slight flair of the pockets at the end. It also appears to be leather lined which makes its $795 a steal compared to other “high-end” designers. Both colors are gorgeous, but I’m a sucker for grey bags. Definitely a bag I’ll consider in the not so distant future.

  5. I agree! I loved the ID chain satchel (which I have! and btw weighs a ton!!!) Saw this bag in person at Saks and it is indeed leather lined which bumps it up in terms of its desirability and makes the price seem somewhat reasonable. As an FYI, MK must have heard your and others comments, because the bag I saw was orange (like Hermes portiron orange) with dark brown leather lining.

  6. I used to love the handbag of Micheal kors, but now ant anymore, I find out their quality is extremely terrible. I bought that handbag since January 2011, now is not even less tahn 3 months, the color is already come off and turn out very badly. the model number is : grayson small satchel monogram, the color is : nickle and the style number is 30S11GYS1Z. I’m very frustrated not only because of the quality of handbag, I also feel like treated it very unfairly. the general manager and the assistant manger from Oakridge Center Mall (in Vancouver) don’t let me to change another new one or get my handbag to repair or fix because I have no receipe……..That is very awful situation. I’m not going to buy MK anymore because totally pissed me off………
