“I’m miked, but I’m not singing.” Such a statement from Victoria Beckham signified just how far she’s come as a designer. In presenting her sixth–and largest–collection to date, Mrs. David Beckham was comfortable enough to poke fun at her own past–and the clothes reflected that similar relaxed mood. With a focus on ease, due perhaps to her pregnancy, Beckham focused on the neat, precise shoulder and introduced proper winter coats into a collection whose color palette was “desert brights.” A vermilion crepe dress with deep V in front and back was the most difficult dress to construct, she admitted, but once that was perfected the rest fell into place. The linear, below-the-knee “nomad dress” with long sleeves and hood; the chic shirtdress that looked like separates from the front and, of course, the oatmeal cashmere square-cut jumper dress with frayed edges that she wore at her show. “I’ve stopped using grosgrain,” Beckham said. Details were abound with this collection: a single ruffle detail around the neck, tucked sleeves on a finale dress to retain a cloudlike structure and a honeycomb jacquard print that was in reality three different colored yarns woven together.
