Thom Browne Fall 2011

Set at the iconic New York Public Library, Thom Browne’s fall women’s collection–his first proper women’s show–demanded silence. Browne turned one of the library’s rooms into a church with a convent’s worth of models dressed like nuns. Marching in to “How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria,” they were covered up in floorlength nunnery gear, save for the massive fake eyelashes that peeked from beneath their habits. As a pair of altar boys freed each model from their cloaks, they revealed the stiff, thick layers he imagined and exaggerated–but always with a preppy twist. There were some incredible works here, including layered maxi coats with shirttail hems, fur parkas that had zippers where their arm cutouts were for versatility and molded bubble skirts that made one question their practicality.
