As Jason Wu brilliantly showed, it’s a season of raw, understated embellishments. The set really said it all: composed of fragments of antique mirror set in gilded frames, the suggestion of the 25-year renovation of the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles was combined with the work of photographer Robert Polidori–specifically, his documentation of the renovation of the French royal palace. Wu doesn’t just make pretty clothes for pretty girls; his designs reflect a maturing opulence that never denies a savage twist. Sportswear is among Wu’s many talents and here they were deconstructed in the most feminine of manner: strips of black appliqué lace down the sleeves of a sweatshirt and coat, androgynous silhouettes sprinkled on with colored crystals and a divine parka that featured a lace “train” scalloped edge just peeking out from the hem. Then there were the goddess gowns–or femme fatale if you will–that poetically juxtaposed the handful of feathered, airy cocktail dresses and puffball skirts in vivacious jewel tones. The golden rococo embroidery said it all.
