Diane von Furstenberg Fall 2011

Looks are deceiving. Diane von Furstenberg knows this well. Having been recently injured during a ski accident, the designer emerged with co-designer Yvan Mispelaere sporting dark aviators that, she said, hid her still-healing eyes. But what needed no mending was the fall collection, which, astute observers will note, opened and closed with signature wrap dresses. If this fall show could be summed up in one term, it would be: the gaucho. The show was themed “American Legends” and the design duo looked at past greats like Diana Vreeland, Gloria Vanderbilt and Millicent Rogers. How did they dress? What roles did they play in society? Rodeo sure seemed to come to mind, by way of the tremendous amounts of fringe and bold Aztec patterns. But there was also a whiff of Studio 54 by way of the loose pajama pants that encouraged lazy lounging. This was undeniably an intense DVF collection–one that packed more pizzazz than in recent memory–but it delivered the goods to back the attitude.
