While Louis Vuitton’s spring bag collection comprises five different lines, it’s the Cuir Art Deco line that figures most prominently in the ad campaign shot by Steven Meisel. Considering the maximalist Oriental adventure Marc Jacobs took us on at Vuitton, these bags are relatively tame. These shoulder bags are a tribute to the Art Deco movement, one of the key inspirations of the show, and while they look great when styled with the complete runway looks, separate they’re a bit boring. As of late Vuitton has been moving away from slapping its Monogram on everything and introducing more exclusive, and horribly expensive, bags that are produced in smaller numbers for a more select clientele. This bag appeals to a discreet luxury client that isn’t fashion forward and prefers stable, elegant pieces. Think of it as the Lexus of status bags. While these bags don’t appeal to me, hopefully it’ll take the cash-cow company back on a more exclusive trajectory.
