Prada Spring 2011

Tired of fall’s almost too clinical minimalism, Miuccia Prada perverted the aesthetic by turning to Baroque minimal. It wasn’t quite Carmen Miranda in “The Gang’s All Here,” as was easy to reference immediately; rather, it was simply about having fun with fashion. Again. It was hard to avoid the South American references what with the tango-dancer marcel waves, the sombreros and wedged espadrilles/Mary Janes and, lest we forget, the bright yellow pair of banana earrings Miuccia herself sported for her runway bow. Musicals served loosely as the underlying basis for this collection–evident in the mix of tango- and flamenco-inflected music to which the models marched about in their monkey and banana rumba skirts and bowling shirts (of which fox stoles in zany stripes accompanied many exits). Suiting came in the form of Japanese cotton that translated into a uniform look. The close of the show, however, proved to be a sophisticated end to a whimsical show. The black dresses, some wrap style, others with ruffled necks, were a beautiful new take on the classic LBD.
