Jil Sander Spring 2011 Bags

It wasn’t just the proportions of his spring collection that Raf Simons played with at Jil Sander. The totes in the collection were, get this, based on ordinary, run-of-the-mill plastic grocery bags that, while we’ve certainly seen done over the years, seemed fresh and new under Simons’ watch. At quick glance they look like plastic; a closer look reveals them actually be leather and vinyl. A novel idea, yes, but how practical can a shapeless–and transparent–sac be? We’ll see come spring, as the company plans to produce these totes but will add a small leather strap to loop through the handles so that they can be worn as a shoulder bag. Would you invest in such a piece? Or is this a DIY project in the making?

  1. This is a trend that is way overdone. He must have gone to the grocery store for the first time in years and marveled at the grocery bags! I’m over the clear bag phase too. I really don’t need anyone seeing some of the interesting/junk items I throw in my bag! A solid bag keeps the kids from seeing the “treats” I’m hiding too! How on earth would I sneak in my milk duds into the theater! 🙂

  2. This would make a great plastic bag to separate items when traveling if it were plastic and cost a dollar or two. I like the colour but I would never buy this bag.

  3. I love the conceptual designer and Raf SImons is one of these. Bt when they mix the “conceptual” with simple “boring” the result is trash-design or trash-objext…liek in this case. A ismple palstic bag colored of red it’s not a bag but only a perfect bag for the rubbish (the rubbish would be cool in this bag…but it will remain still rubgbish)

  4. I don’t know what the price is, but from the look of it, there’s no way I’d spend money on something that looks like a fancy garbage bag.
