Dolce & Gabbana Spring 2011

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana paid homage to the beauty of handcrafted Sicilian white lace with a show that played up the romance factor their Dolce & Gabbana brand has become so synonymous with over the decades. With brides-to-be as their muse, there were plenty of dresses, cleaving to the body, or narrow-waisted and with voluminous skirts (some giving glimpses of substantial bras and knickers underneath), as well as tailored pencil skirts, cropped jackets, and diaphanous blouses–much of it detailed with floral appliqués. Almost every single piece worked in communion white lace of every description, chiffon, and some tweed that looked like it had been crocheted–and often came embellished with sparkling, beaded diamanté embroideries. It was as if they had plundered the linen cupboards of Sicily! And in keeping with the virtual absence of big night dressing on the runways this past few weeks, eschewed was anything too dramatically showy in favor of some knee-length lace dresses worked with crystals and rhinestones. Following the parade of tweed suiting, bolero and shorts sets, minidresses with rows of ribbons down the back, and below-the-knee, hourglass-slinks, the models disappeared–only to reappear in the finale, all stripped down to “honeymoon” underwear, including a pair of frilly bloomers.
