Smythson Fall 2010 Bag Collection

For those who know Smythson as solely one of the world’s premier stationers, it’s time to look again. The British brand–whose textured and chic notebooks and diaries are favored by everyone from Madonna to Gwyneth Paltrow–maintains a small but burgeoning leathergoods business that has developed quite the cult following. At a preview of its fall bags this week, I was immediately drawn to one of its classic bags, the Nancy, which has been updated for fall in a tote version ideal for the everyday professional woman. Available in two sizes, and in plum, grey, black and white, the larger easily accommodates a MacBook and iPad while the smaller can comfortably house the latter along with your other daily essentials (here’s hoping Smythson’s take on an iPad cover comes out soon!). Featuring the signature hand-riveted quilting that has become the mainstay of the Nancy collection, the two large interior pockets are roomy and feature a purple satin lining that’s rich yet durable. In a new era where discreet luxury has become all the rage, this fashionable tote more than lives up to its necessary style quotient (I only wish the day would come sooner when Smythson will have leather bags for the gents).

Complementing the Nancy tote is Smythson’s new Virginia clutch and handbag. Named after Virginia Woolf, one of the foremost modernist literary figures of the twentieth century, the bag bears some quintessential bookwormish traits to it–but there’s nothing dour about here. Again, fully lined with purple satin, the clutch is a classy way to enter any social function without screaming “look at me,” while the convenient long-strapped handbag offers practicality with a forward-thinking twist. While a magnetic closure keeps valuable secure, it’s the horizontal piping of the Virginia bags that I love; it keeps the collection modern and fresh while exuding a timeless appeal that spreads across to all Smythson categories. Plus, as with all Smythson leathergoods, they’re plenty roomy for your cell phone, Blackberry and company, so don’t be afraid to carry that extra lip gloss–or three.

Virginia clutch ($860) & handbag ($1,205); Nancy tote small ($1,130) & large ($1,380)

  1. I love Smythson and the fact that they take their time to create a new bag-by applying patience and skill the end result can be appreciated a lot more than the latest ‘it bag’ churned out season after season.

  2. Both of these bags are beautiful. My favorite is the black tote. I love the detailed work on the bag. I can hear the compliments from my friends once I get the bag. Absolutely amazing.

  3. I can`t see any difference between one of these bags ,and something I could find at the corner of the street.

  4. I love the orange tote. I would wear it in a minute. A bag at the corner of the street wouldn’t be leather and have a the same type of craftmanship. It’s a waste of money if it doesn’t last by the time you got to the next corner.
