J. Crew Women’s Fall 2010

Call J.Crew women’s creative director Jenna Lyons’ designs playful or edgy; just don’t call them “preppy.” In the past few years, the American brand has made a concerted effort to modernize itself and the results have clearly paid off. With its first formal, out-of-house presentation at Milk Studios last week (second, if you could the Explorer’s Club showing), Lyons channeled “Edie Beale goes to Girl Scout camp” that resulted in classic outerwear infused with a military feel. This she paired with girly sequined separates–thereby reinforcing her layered theme in an otherwise well-balanced mix of colorful hues with uniform shades that was feminized with crazy-layered jewelry & an emphasis on leather & shearling. Note the use Mongolian lamb fur, as well as the introduction of an adorable little cape!

Much like with men’s, Lyons’ J.Crew woman is a constant collaborator. To wit: for fall, there’s a hat line by Albertus Swanepoel and, out now, jewelry with Fenton/Fallon. Lyons’ dream J.Crew collaborators? Christian Louboutin for shoes and YSL’s Stefano Pilati for ready-to-wear.
