The Huffington Post reported today that the Consumer Product Safety Commission is preparing to issue a general warning about possible suffocation deaths from small infants being carried in baby slings. These slings have been popular for ages but there have been too many deaths caused by these slings for the government to not do something about it. The warning should come out sometime this week.
The picture you have placed on this entry is a carrier that is completely different in concept and style to the dangerous slings mentioned in your linked article. This could be very misleading. The Huffington Post article mentions a very specific kind of sling and a specific body position that’s dangerous to newborns, and the photo on your post depicts neither.
This picture is from the Huffington Post article.
That’s odd, I don’t see it on the article’s page. I do see a photo of the Slingrider, which is the style of sling that is dangerous. I wish the journalists reporting this warning would be more specific. 🙁
It appears that the “sling” in the photo is one that Tiffany Speck, the nurse interviewed in the article, would actually recommend. “…upright position, with the baby’s tummy facing mommy’s tummy.” I think this type of baby-carrier is more often called a wrap.
