Alexa Chung in Lulu Guinness: Snob or Slob?

alexa chung.jpg8b123Dc4043d3A4A__profile.jpg

Lulu Guinness is such an original. I’m completely obsessed with her kooky personal style and my weekend travel bags are all from the designer’s namesake label (surprisingly they were great investments: I bought three of them about six years ago on sale at Bergdorf Goodman and they’re still as good as new!). Above Alexa Chung (on a side note, I can’t believe It’s On with Alexa Chung was canceled!), is pictured in the F/W 09 Lulu Guinness Kooky Eyed Cat Clutch ($366). Hard to imagine anyone who loves Lulu Guinness not loving this design; it’s super cute, quirky and the price isn’t bad! Obviously it’s not for everyone and not something you’d wear more than 2 or 3 times probably, but it’s fun (those whiskers!), and Chung has styled herself with the bag very nicely.

What do you think about the Cat Clutch? Snob or Slob?

DO YOU LOVE IT OR HATE IT?

  1. I’m sorry, but what? This bag is absolutely hideous!! I’m sorry, but I have been a fan of Bag Snob for a very long time, but the addition of the extra writers (aside from the fabulous Tina and Kelly) have really downgraded Bag Snob SO MUCH. The quality of the writing, and not to mention the bags that are featured, are no longer consistent to the conceptualization that the site is originally known for.

I mean, a cat bag with whiskers as “Snob or Slob?”? Why should there even be any question to it? Seriously.

  2. Although I would never pick out this bag for myself, I can appreciate the quirkiness and originality of it with this outfit. I have to admit that Alexa somehow makes it work! I like the element of surprise, she could have gone with any safe black clutch or bag but she did not. Seeing this clutch alone hardly gives off the same effect. It comes as a reminder that fashion is supposed to be fun- without all these cat and other weird bags that only a few are brave enough to wear the world would be a tad more boring. I know that my morning was brightened when I read this post and I think that is what we all need!

  3. Ditto Mirna!!!!!!!!! Couldn’t have said it better myself. Why are we even being subjected to looking at bags such as this Hello Kitty thing? Or bags from a line called Dead Ponies, etc??????

  4. Lulu Guinness is actually a very respected designer and just because you don’t like this bag doesn’t mean there aren’t more daring fashioniastas with quirky styles that would love to wear it! That’s why it’s a question – snob or slob.

  5. Definitely SLOB — for both the bag and the writer. I Think this site and the other Snob sites should go back to having just Tina and Kelly. I know it’s a lot of work for just the two of them, but I’d rather have fewer blog entries than read more inane pieces from the likes of Sharon. She’s probably a perfectly nice person, but her taste is questionable at best. More Tina and Kelly, please!

  6. ” Chung has styled herself with the bag very nicely.”!? I screamed WHAT?! in my mind.

Her outfit does NOT go with the bag at all and on a red carpet? I think she was trying to grab some attention… which I doubt she receive positive ones other than this post. NOwhere near being stylish precisely because of that out of place bag. Any adult carrying this bag and love it… for me at least, is very bizarre…. and what kind of style is this? back to kindergarden?

BTW I do like Lulu Guinness, and I do not love this design at all. Hard to imagine? For me, this is a no brainer- It looks like some kind of craft work a child can design. AND the price is ridiculous for this bag.

I find it hard to imagine I just read this on bagsnob and also disagree to all the points in the post. Most of all, I also find it hard to imagine any bagsnobs would carry this bag…

  7. I don’t think wearing this bag is only for attention in the same way that someone doesn’t only wear a crystal apple/bird/etc..Judith Leiber bag just for attention. Just different style, having fun with fashion…

  8. Personally I see nothing wrong with her outfit, I think it’s actually kinda cute. The bag I think is a little ridiculous. I mean you can got to the kids department in almost any store and buy a bag very similar to that for less than 15 bucks.

  9. I completely agree. The whole outfit is ridiculous. I have nothing against people being different and quirky, I am, and I appreciate it. But there is a difference between having style and dressing like a joke. A great example of someone who has broken away from the mould and looks amazing is Diane Kruger. She manages to pick unusual outfits but all the while making them look completely natural on her. She always looks inspiring and has a true sense of style. The Alexa Chungs and Agyness Deyns and their ridiculous 80s fancy dress party clothes are nowhere near the same league.

I also don’t think this deserves to make it onto Bag Snob.

  10. Although I often pop in on Bagsnob, I haven’t left a comment in a really long time. This time i feel I ought to. Fashion is about imagination and daring choices: I would not wear this bag other than to my kids’ recital BUT I think everyone deserves to have an opinion AND a choice. If all the bags that were being made looked effortlessly chic like Bottega Veneta ones, and came only in classy, modest colors like taupe and beige we would not appreciate them as much. Choice is good and I think this bag is probably made well and displays a certain level of craftsmanship. Having said that, I also feel it is somewhat morbid to take out rage against Sharon; she was CHOSEN by Tina and Kelly and if you trust their Snob-sense, you should trust Sharon’s as well!

  11. I think it’s ridiculous that people are being so rude about Sharon’s writing…I for one am glad to have a fresh face and different perspective on the blog. Come to think about it I feel the same way about fashion, there is only so many Birkins I can get excited about so I think it’s great to see someone with their own style rather than the generic!!!

  12. There is a huge difference between trying to produce a good post vs trying to fill up the spaces- “bag snob- a selective editorial on bags.” we expected quality not quantity to begin with. It has just been disappointing… not just this post but severals now that I felt was poor to prompt me to write such lengthy comments.

The fashion world isn’t so forgiving in the real world. Not like a blog where you can come back and edit your posts without letting the readers know, which she has done so here- posted something which was poor with a mistake that is a big no-no in fashion world that could have been easily avoided if she has done her work right, then came back edited half of the post. you take responsibility in your work in order to be respected. Once it is printed on newspapers, magazines, it is a done deal. so are your mistakes. the words are who you are to the readers.

Frankly I feel it is very disrespectful. I personally feel strongly about this as I feel she has given me the impression that she does not take bagsnob as seriously as us readers do.

Reviews are only useful and respected when the writer’s taste/words are valued. If it is just sharing opinions, anyone can be a ‘fashion blogger’. The efforts really show through. Be responsible and value your own work first, then your readers would do too.

There is always a fine line between fashion forward & fashion disaster- the reality here and purely on this bag- would you really buy this bag for 366, wear it 2 or 3 times, one of them being a red carpet event. I wouldn’t.

Kelly and Tina have come a long way to achieve their success with this blog and it is on a totally different scale than it used to be. understandably there would be changes. and with Sharon, I wish them all the best of luck…

  13. Elaine,

I’m very sorry you feel that way, but I assure you I take this very seriously. I’ve long had a passion for anything fashion and beauty related and have been working in the industry in some capacity since High School when I interned at Norma Kamali and Moschino. Incidentally I think those two brands are very indicative of my style. I love classic, timeless pieces, but I’m also a 24 year old born and raised New Yorker who takes fashion risks. So one day I might be in a conservative Kamali look and the next I might be in something over-the-top from Moschino.

I have written for a number of newspapers and magazines as well, but it’s writing for the various Snob sites that I enjoy the most especially when I get feedback (though it’s sometimes hard to hear when it’s so harsh!).

Again, I’m sorry that you were offended in some capacity, but just because I like a cat bag doesn’t mean I’m not taking this seriously. While I do not own the above bag I actually own a similar crocodile-shaped one that I got at Takashimaya in NYC a few years ago..I haven’t worn it more than 3 times, but when I do it puts a smile on my face:)

  14. Hi all,

Kelly and I just read all the comments today and some of them are really harsh! 🙁

We hired Sharon last year to offer a different perspective for the site– that of a young snob. Apologies if some of you are offended but I’m sure you would have been appalled at some of my choices when I was 24 🙂

Happy holidays! Hope everyone enjoys time with family and friends this week. xoxo Tina

  15. slob, the bag looks like something I would by at hello kitty for my 5 year old niece I don’t quite understand the obsession with her

  16. I really like Sharons posts, they definitely bring a new perspective which is lovely to have. This bag is definitely for a younger audience, preteen to teen to twenties, and I think that’s why some older readers may be slightly outraged, it’s not as classic as other bags shown, but it’s still good to have opinions. Personally, I don’t think I would pay $366 for it though, there are other similar cutsey bags for cheaper, and I don’t think I would use it that often to warrant the price. If i’m only going to wear it out twice as a half-joke, I don’t really need amazing quality either. If I saw it for $16? Maybe. Keep posting Sharon!

  17. Slob! I love Hello Kitty but would never carry this Ugly Thing! I could have made that bag out of felt when I was in 5th grade!
