LC Marc by Marc Jacobs Satchel: Snob or Slob?

lc.jpg

In my life I’ve only owned one Marc by Marc Jacobs bag and it was way back in High School. It was this off white handbag with little cupcakes sewn on the bottom and a handful of cute pins (one of which was an “MJ” pin and I still remember my little brother saying to me “MJ? Like Michael Jackson!?” Similarly he inquired if the”CD” on my Dior Saddle Bag was for Celine Dion..ahh memories!). The bag was clearly a perfect fit for my 16 year old self. Fast forward 10 years later however and my feeling on the line still hasn’t really changed. For the most part the only bags in the line I like don’t fit my age demo anymore and the others just seem kind of boring! Above LC is toting the Marc By Marc Jacobs Dr. Q Groovee Satchel ($498). I do think the price point is pretty good (it’s leather), and it does look like it would be easy to find things in it given the size, shape, and the inside pockets, it’s just too plain Jane for my taste.

What do you think? Snob or Slob?

DO YOU LOVE IT OR HATE IT?

  1. Really? I think it’s a snob, but I like simple lines and not a lot of hardware in my bags, so I guess this fits my taste.

  2. snob – definitely a good choice for younger people/students that don’t have a thousand or more to spend on a bag. it’s not super exciting, but all the details are nice. although it looks, from the picture with lauren, like it might have that enormous annoying labe/plaque on the front – marc by marc jacobs bags would be so much better without that.

  3. i like the bag. some people want a nice leather bag that will last forever for under $600 and the marc by marc bags do just that. however, this post was disappointing because the marc by marc jacobs line was not even launched until 2001, meaning “fast forward 10 years” does not make sense. i always look to posts on this blog as “the credible” voice of the handbag industry, upsetting to see such a lack of research into this post

  4. Actually, LC is carrying the Dr. Q Remy Bag (not the Dr. Q Groovee bag!)

Also, MbMJ came out with this design way back in 2007, so technically, Coach is the one that is copying MbMJ designs, not the other way around!

SNOB all the way. Marc rocks my world!!

  6. I caught on to that too, the Marc by Marc Jacobs line debuted in 2001…wow is it 2011 already??? Why don’t we leave the postings to the real snobs Tina & Kelley…at least they know what they are talking about.

btw, SNOB all the way!!! MBMJ leather is so soft to be a slob…plus it is not too label-y and tacky…and please ladies-to put MJ in the same sentence as coach is a DISGRACE!

  7. 10 years is a bit of an exaggeration. I was a junior in High School when I got it which was 2001 to 2002 and I was 16. I just turned 24, so that more like 7 or 8 years…

  8. I certainly did not spend $600 on a canvas bag with cupcakes! I don’t remember the price, but I’m pretty sure it was under $200. I think this bag is a good deal for someone looking for a mid-range everyday bag it’s just too plain for my taste and that has nothing to do with the price…

  9. I own this bag in black with silver hardware. It is a great bag for everyday use. I say snob because it is definately not slob.

  10. The only “snob” about this post is the author’s perspective. MBMJ for a highschooler? Seriously? Get off your high-horse, please. This bag is nowhere near Slob and LC wears it great! It’s nice to see celebrities carry attainable pieces every now and then. If “Bag Snob Sharon” is only 24, I’d like to know what she does for a living to scoff at this bag. I mean, I’m 26 and make 88k (which I thought was OK) and MBMJ is still a luxury purchase for me.

  11. Again, I never called this bag a slob!

I just said it was too plain for my taste — “I do think the price point is pretty good (it’s leather), and it does look like it would be easy to find things in it given the size, shape, and the inside pockets, it’s just too plain Jane for my taste.”

The bag is too plain for my taste..that doesn’t mean I think it’s a slob and that certainly doesn’t mean that I think $498 is pocket change!

  12. Maybe Sharon is independently wealthy or maybe she’s a starving student with snob taste

    Why does that matter?

And why are you bragging about making $88,000 a year?

  13. I have this bag (the Groovee, not the Remy) in a purple/magenta shade. Although I also like it in the black and tan shades, I think the color of mine would prevent anybody from ever calling it “plain Jane”.

(And I got it on sale for only $173 so I feel even better about the price point!)

In any color, I’d say this bag is a ‘snob’. While exciting bags are fun, it’s always nice to have something practical and simple.

  14. I COMPLETELY agree with you…and $173?!?!?!?!? Where did you score that find, that’s an AMAZING price!!! I got a tan MBMJ bag from Barney’s here in Chicago for $199…I nearly passed out! Probably the most versatile and comfortable bag! I wouldn’t compare it to my designer bags, but it very much holds its own!

  15. Actually, the bag LC is carrying is the Twisted Q Groovee Satchel in Tan.

Yes, I would say this bag’s design is one of a kind. Too bad they are so hard to find in this color. They must have not made enough of this color!
