Celebrity-based New York dentist Dr. Smigel is not only responsible for the pearly whites of stars like Johnny Depp, he is the founder of Supersmile a great line of tooth whitening and cleaning products (Beauty Snob Tina loves their gum!). I’m a big fan of their floss and toothpaste. For the longest time I’ve been using Glide, because well, it just glides right on in! Little did I know that it wasn’t cleaning effectively (pretty much doesn’t get rid of anything besides large chunks of food stuck in teeth), which you’ll notice if you switch to Supersmile’s whitening floss. Dr. Smigel doesn’t come out with new products often so when he does, they are always exceedingly well researched. I asked him for some tips on non-bleaching alternative to getting a whiter smile and here’s what he had to say!
Whitening teeth at home can be achieved safely, easily and quickly with Supersmile – with no downside like sensitivity, abrasion or chance of over-whitening – in as little as two steps.

Step 1: For dark yellow stains from years of coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco consumption, start with Supersmile Whitening Pre-rinse, a tablespoon full, swish around teeth for about 30 seconds. The hydrogen peroxide in the formula opens the enamel rods and prepares teeth for accelerated whitening.
Step 2: Follow with Supersmile Professional Whitening System. Combine equal, pearl-size amounts of Accelerator and Whitening Toothpaste on a dry brush. Brush teeth in circular motions for two full minutes. The small System (1.75 oz) contains enough product for 60 uses – when used twice daily for a month. And it contains fluoride, so you don’t need to use any other toothpaste or change your habits. The reason for the dry brush is because the saliva activates the encapsulated Calprox, Supersmile’s proprietary whitening ingredient, along with the carbamide peroxide in the Accelerator. Repeat twice daily. In as little as six brushings teeth will be shades whiter. Continue until you achieve your desired shade. Dental restorations like bondings, caps, veneers, laminates, dentures and braces will only whiten to their original shade. (NOTE: Once you’ve achieved your desired shade, you may discontinue using the Pre-Rinse and continue with System – or even rotate with just the Whitening Toothpaste which will continue to remove the surface stains with every brushing.)
Everyone’s case is different. Depending on how deep your staining is Supersmile is completely safe to use daily – in any combination – indefinitely.
In between brushings or when you simply cannot brush (like on a plane, in between meetings, after a glass of red wine), Dr. Smigel recommends one of their on-the-go products: Either the Quikee – which is a brushless tooth polish, also containing Calprox, the Supersmile Whitening Gum, which also contains Calprox as well as Xylitol – so it fights cavities at the same time, or Supersmile Powdered Mouthrinse – all delivering that same smooth, clean (plus whitening) effect.
Excellent info, might have to try that tooth whitener out soon – I’ve always worried about damaging my tooth enamel with other stuff!
