Miu Miu Studded Bag: Snob or Slob?

miumiucrossbody.jpg

I was really excited to find an adorable studded bag from Miu Miu under $900 to share with you until I realized it’s made of plastic. Quilted eco-leather is what they call it but I call it a rip off. Since when did PVC become eco-friendly? It’s animal friendly but certainly not human nor eco friendly. Such a bummer because the style is really hot. The sprinkling of studs along the stitching of the quilting is perfectly executed as is the subtle hardware ring details on the handle. $895 is a pretty penny for a plastic bag that can rip if bumped against a sharp object. I say Snob for style and function but Slob for price and material. What about you? $895 at Bergdorf Goodman

  1. Wow! I am really surprised that Miu Miu is now using PVC in their handbags. You can get that made in China for like $50, because PVC is like $1 per square foot for the cost of the material…Wow, crazy.

I would never spend that much money on a plastic bag, and I also agree…I hate it when people call PVC – eco friendly, the main ingredient used to make PVC is petroleum (oil) so its totally not eco-friendly.

    thanks for sharing.

  2. I’m irritated but not surprised that the writer is so dismissive of the fact that the bag is “animal friendly.” I am not inclined to quibble about the “value” of the material, because I can’t be blase about wearing the skin of a beautiful animal. Some things you can’t put a price on, ladies.

  3. LOVE LOVE the purse… and then you said it was PVC. 🙁 I’m a fashionista but not the most graceful gal. Don’t like how easy it can be to mess up PVC bags. Disappointed.

  4. i LOVE that its pvc, which is btw way more eco-friendly than any of the skins you have on teh site so please get off your ‘not human friendly’ high horse but this bag isn’t even animal friendly, BG says the lining is SUEDE? who exactly are they marketing this to?

  5. I have to agree with your last comment, a PVC suede lined bag!?!? Who are they marketing to? Bizarre.

But I stand behind my statement of production of PVC being harmful to humans. I grew up in Taiwan (most of PVC plants were there in the 70s and 80s) and my uncle owned a PVC factory. I know the detriments it has on the health of humans, I’ve seen it first hand.

  6. To put my feelings in a very graphic manner; I’d much rather birth 15 lampreys through my left foot.

However, the eye to detail is certainly there – look at how the studding-quilting-detaily thingy lines up all around the bag. That had to take some effort (please note some, which doesn’t imply a whole lot, just enough thought so that nothing looks funky).

As for the aforementioned suede lining – what’s up with that? This bag is messed up!

‘A’ for effort, MiuMiu (and so many people wonder why I don’t quite fancy Prada and/or MiuMiu at all).

  7. Wait one more minute – I have a funny tidbit on the topic of pvc to share with my Bag Snob friends – I remember shopping for little shoes for my daughter. The salesman @ Nordstrom was selling me a pair of patent leather shoes for $70 until I checked the inside & it said “man made”. I told him my dislike for plastic shoes and he insisted their were different grades of plastic and I informed him that the only time I cared about different grades of plastic is when I do my grocery shopping and I buy eggs, I hope the plastic bag doesn’t break! Other than that I don’t want my kids feet sweating in “pleather”! At the same time folks, there is no need to import a plastic bag all the way from Italy to justify that price tag! Have a great weekend! 🙂

  8. I really love this style but the pvc is a major turn off. what’s the point of a pvc bag lined in suede? weird. Slob

  9. Cute bag, but I’m with you Tina on the PVC material, a major turnoff, just like I was put off by the designer Vinyl bags a couple of seasons ago. I also echo your sentiments on the health hazards of PVC. Thanks for the heads up on the bag. Ping

  10. Strange that my comment has not been published. I say it again, this bag is not made of plastic but leather (calf).

  11. Actually it is plastic.

If you read the description on BG website, it says eco-leather, (plasticized fabric).

  12. I agree that this bag is NOT AT ALL animal or enviromentally friendly. Not only are plastics hot in the summer and cold in the winter, they are a petroleum derived product, and more importantly they DO NOT EVER break down in landfills.

So to recap – made from petroleum, and are around forever.

  13. PVC/plastic heats up here in the summertime in southern NM – even in an air-conditioned car unless you place it on the shady side of the car.

Nonetheless, carrying such a bag around in the hot weather will cause the bag to stick to you causing perspiration at the contact point perforce. Plus, all those little studs – those will heat up too! Yowza!!!!

Maybe girls in Sweden would love this bag – would be water-repellent for sure.

  14. Hi Tina! Lovely Sunday here in Prague.

Two things: first of all, along with being polluting, PVC wears down

faster, therefore even if the bag is gorgeous, chances are the buyer will

discard it sooner than if it were a durable leather that ages well. To me,

that makes this bag more “sustainable.”

However, I have been reading up on leather tanning and the effects that it

has on the environment. Apparently two of the biggest Superfund sites in

the US are former tanneries. The process is so heavily polluting that

instead of cleaning up their acts, the plants have moved overseas where the

regulations are less stringent (or non-existant). Many of these tanneries

are in China. The negative environmental and health effects are

    indisputable.

So I’m torn: obviously PVC is the worst choice from an environmental point

of view but leather is also a bad option.

The key would be to invest in fewer bags but to chose heart-stoppingly

beautiful ones that you will love for many years.

  15. Hi Rachel! How are you sweetie?

I know, I think organic hemp cotton is our only choice but seriously? Have never seen a cute hemp cotton bag 🙁

We should design one. And at least certain leathers (cowskin, lambskin) are by products. PVC serves no other purpose…

  16. Totally agree re: the ugly organic cotton bit. This is what I want to move to the States to work on.

The key for me is that the average consumer should forgo purchasing a few years worth of crap PVC or trashy trendy bags and instead save up for one that might cost $1000+ but will look great for many years. I should have started saving years ago! 😉

  17. I don’t knock eco friendly if that’s important to you, but it shouldn’t be $900. All they should be charging for is the design…which is awesome btw. Also there are better, sturdier eco friendly materials than PVC.
