August Elle UK Cover: Snob or Slob?

OMG — this shouldn’t even be a question, please I beg anyone to justify this in any way shape or form as a snob! In case you don’t recognize the cover girl, it’s none other than19-years-old Harry Potter actress Emma Watson. Watson has been becoming quite the fashionista as of late — she’s been schmoozing with Daphne Guinness, has been photographed by Karl Lagerfeld, and attended a high-profile exclusive dinner for the Rodarte sisters at Harvey Nichols. Did I mention she was recently picked by Burberry to be the face of their latest Mario Testino-shot campaign and is in the process of creating her own range of apparel for teens? Did none of these fashion encounters rub off? She looks like a photoshopped version of Misha Barton on this cover (how fitting given Barton’s mostly awful fashion choices). I’m not even going to tackle her over-the-top cat eyes (her overly-photoshopped face actually looks cover-worthy), her hair (which looks like she has 10 pieces of gum stuck in it), or even question what in the world she is doing sitting like that on a stool — no, no I will stay focused on the slob fashion choices! Lace-up Roberto Cavalli pants (fall 2009) — seriously? I know she wants to get away from her good girl image, but does she need to channel Marilyn Manson?? Her top is from Giles and comes complete with a raised GG logo (tacky I say). What say you — snob or slob?

DO YOU LOVE IT OR HATE IT?

  1. I saw her in person at a private viewing of the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy last year which she attended with her dad. She looked delicate, trendy and surprisingly (for me) grown-up. (I know, the next thing I’ll be saying is “aren’t policemen awfully young these days?”). The real problem with this picture is not whether it’s tasteful, although clearly it is not. It’s that it drowns who she is: the make-up and hair look like they’re wearing her, rather than the other way around. You should never have to ask who the cover girl is. Being surprised is good, as in, “I’d never appreciated before how buff X is … wait is that photoshopping?”, but even with her name right next to her, I didn’t recognise her.

  2. Don’t you think you are over doing your rant Sharon? Do you think she chose all her clothes, hair style and make-up for this Elle shoot? Don’t you think ELLE is channeling just a bit the 80’s theme for F/W fashion (yawn)? And, by the way, Misha Barton graced the cover and the inside main editorial of the July/August L’Officiel(de la couture et de la mode de Paris). She looks fabulous, cat-eyes make-up and all. Here’s a link if you’re not familiar with this mag.

  3. I saw Misha Barton in person during Paris Fashion Week two seasons ago..she was sitting front row with Jessica Stam at the Marlies Dekkers show (there were only 3 rows and I was sitting in her section a few people away from being behind her). She is gorgeous and very tall — could totally pass for a model — even next to Stam. That said her outfit was awful! Top hat, suspenders, short shorts and a tee shirt (in the dead of winter). She often looks great on shoots because of her model looks and quirky style which translates well into editorial….but not when it comes to street fashion at least in my opinion!

Also yes, I understand that Emma didn’t get to choose her outfit on her own..but neither did Gwen on US Elle and she looks stunning, quirky, and stylish all at the same time..

  4. I would blame the stylist in both cases if the cover model is snob or slob and not blame a poor 19 yr old. I didn’t exactly scream SNOB in college.

  5. Total slob on the clothes! I thought it was a Gucci knock off top. Perhaps she is in an experimental stage?!

In any case, agree with Sharon on her tryin to change her image– a bit too drastically I should say.

  6. I’m guessing she didn’t have any say in the outfit, hair/makeup/ and pose.

    What was ELLE UK thinking?!

  7. this seems like an excessive amount of bile to be directed at a 19 year old – or anyone, for that matter. yeah it’s not the best magazine cover, but.. it’s a magazine cover.

  8. I don’t know…I kind of think if it was interlocking C’s on the bustier instead of G’s, we all might be singing a different tune. Such is the power of suggestion…
