Rihanna: Cover Girl Spokeswoman

rihanna.jpgI’m so disturbed by the whole Rihanna/Chris Brown story — especially how young girls are reacting. I can’t believe that so many women are siding with Chris Brown — there’s a very interesting story on this in the Style section of the New York Times — and at the risk of sounding naive I am absolutely shocked by the statistic that keeps coming-up that notes that 1 in 3 women have or are in an abusive relationship. Here was such a perfect opportunity for Rihanna to stand-up and take a stance against abuse, instead she does exactly the opposite — I can’t think of a more horrifying example for young girls or for women of any age who are in an abusive relationship. To make matters worse, Cover Girl has started running ads with Rihanna with the words “Light Up Your Eyes” written on the bottom. I find the ads to be completely inappropriate and disturbing. I’ve applauded Cover Girls bold choices in the past (Ellen DeGeneres, Queen Latifah), but I find running these ads inexcusable and in poor taste. Do you agree?

DO YOU LOVE IT OR HATE IT?

  1. Well.. these ads were executed before the whole incident, and Rihanna has been CoverGirl’s spokesperson for quite some time now. Of course CoverGirl/P&G (their parent company) should have pulled the ads in light of the accident/incident (no pun intended)…

  2. I wish they would pull this ad. It is completely inappropriate. You also should remember that it is extremely hard for a woman to leave an abusive relationship. People should never judge domestic abuse victims unless they have been in their situation. It is difficult to leave an abuse relationship because the abuser can have “good” and “bad” sides. One day, he can be loving, and another day he could be beating her up. It’s a very confusing process, and I don’t recommend judging a woman who returns to her abuser unless you know more about the situation.

  3. It’s truly disturbing and I completely agree. These ads are running in weekly magazines so Covergirl did have the option to pull. It’s quite odd to, because when I see her I immediately think of the photo of her battered face. I don’t think wearing the same makeup that Rihanna has own will make me look pretty — quite the opposite I think about the damage to her face from the beating.

Rihanna is entitled to make her own decisions. But if she wants the money and the fame, she should be prepared to deal with the fallout

  4. Um, YIKES. I hadn’t seen these ads but I totally agree with you. Frankly, I think her choice to stay with an abusive man makes her ANYTHING but a role model (not blaming the victim here). Cover Girl needs to find a new spokeswoman.

  5. Yes,most women who are abused DO NOT have the opportunity of being the covergirl for Cover Girl or attending awards ceremonies. It has crossed my mind this whole abuse thing was staged to get Rihanna some publicity (or Cover Girl or Chris Brown). I have never cared for Rihanna & thought she was a publicity seeker from the start. Cover Girl needs to dump her. Surely someone with less personal problems hitting the air ways each day might be a better choice. Cover Girl may need to realize they are a low scale cosmetics firm. They need to recognize their target audience-which they are continually missing.

  6. I think this is a ridiculous post, I did not make the connection and I don’t think many reasonable people would either. Honestly, I think you didn’t have anything to write about so you decided to write a post that you thought would raise some eyebrows even when it’s obvious and very doubtful a company would ever want to profit on an incidence of domestic violence.

Can you go back to reviewing products? You’re much better at that…
