Backwards Gown: Faux Pas?

When I first saw photos of Angelina Jolie at the SAG Awards in her blue Max Azria dress I thought it was a rather safe and boring look, though she pulled it off in that effortless way she always does. When I found-out though that Jolie wore the gown, from Max Azria’s spring 2009 collection, backwards I couldn’t believe it! I’m all about wearing things to suit your style and I think it says a lot about the design that it can be worn both front and back, but somehow I feel like it’s a slap in the face to the designer to wear the gown backwards at such a public event! Personally the plunging neckline would have been too deep for me as well, but I definitely think the gown looks more chic the way it was intended to be worn. For her part, Angelina’s stylist says that she wore it backwards to make it “more blouson” and perhaps, I would think, to show-off her back tattoos. Again, I’m all about wearing pieces to suit your style, but at such a public event is it a faux pas to distort a designer’s vision?
