When I first saw photos of Angelina Jolie at the SAG Awards in her blue Max Azria dress I thought it was a rather safe and boring look, though she pulled it off in that effortless way she always does. When I found-out though that Jolie wore the gown, from Max Azria’s spring 2009 collection, backwards I couldn’t believe it! I’m all about wearing things to suit your style and I think it says a lot about the design that it can be worn both front and back, but somehow I feel like it’s a slap in the face to the designer to wear the gown backwards at such a public event! Personally the plunging neckline would have been too deep for me as well, but I definitely think the gown looks more chic the way it was intended to be worn. For her part, Angelina’s stylist says that she wore it backwards to make it “more blouson” and perhaps, I would think, to show-off her back tattoos. Again, I’m all about wearing pieces to suit your style, but at such a public event is it a faux pas to distort a designer’s vision?
In this case I don’t think so, because if she wasn’t “allowed” to wear it backwards, then she might not have worn it at all and then Max wouldn’t have gotten the press coverage that it has…plus isn’t the point of fashion to make it your own? so no…no faux pas…it actually looks great on her as it is and that is way too low cut for a mom of however many to be wearing! lol..she is hot though!
I read from one of the websites(forgot which one)it’s designed to be reversible. You can wear it either way to your liking.
i actually liked the way angie pulled it off better than the model.
There’s a train on Angie’s going away from her, so I don’t think she wore it backwards. I do believe they are similar dresses, though. I think it looks better on her that way anyways. (it would’ve been boring either way, though)
To me, if you buy it, it’s your to do with as you please. I’m sick “artiste” designers. You create clothes to be worn and enjoyed. Inspiring your patrons should be a compliment. I am not a Jolie fan, but I like it this way.
I disagree with the distortion of a designer’s vision. If a designer wanted us to dress the way he envisioned, we would all be in runway looks, with no personality or more importantly, style.
Furthermore, it’s very often where celebrities wear a mixture of designers to an event – will that be considered as distorting a designer’s vision?
I’m not a fan of how Angelina dresses, but she injects her own character into her outfits to make it her own, and that’s style.
