Mulberry Snakeskin “Maggie” Clutch

Mulberry Maggie Clutch in Polished Goatskin

Loved this Mulberry clutch on sight but then took a closer look at hardware and realized it is a cheap knock off of my Hermes Medor clutch! Sigh… throw me a bone people! Why not just put a simple piece of metal here? At $595 the price is right but what’s the point of carrying around a knock off looking bag when I have the original? My UK girls keep telling me the brand is a dud and I’m starting to agree with them. But if you like the look of the Medor and can’t bring yourself to shell out the price, you can get it for a fraction of the original from Mulberry. The Maggie clutch is $995 in snakeskin,

Update: Hi all, I was sent an email from the Mulberry team explaining the hardware– it is actually inspired by a vintage British military/school bag and the resemblance to Hermes was coincidental.

  1. I like this better than the Medor, because the hardware on the Hermès is too bulky for me. And this price is waaaaay more reasonable. 🙂

But I already know my palette is unrefined, so there you go.

  2. I’m with Kaytey. Although I admire the look of the Medor clutch, I couldn’t quite see myself with something that has hardware that big, although kudos to you if you can carry it off. And of course nothing has the snob value of Hermès so this clutch couldn’t compete on that front anyway.

It seems fine for what it is, but frankly if you were looking for an exciting British bag designer right now, you’d be buying Anya (or possibly Tanner Krolle) right? (Btw, good luck to you all at the Anya sale tomorrow – just don’t even consider buying anything that I want!)

Mulberry tends to do good solid shapes in wearable colours as well as the usual fashion colours, like mustard and currently a turquoise so bright that it sears your retinas. (Honestly, who wants a bag in mustard?) Plenty of women I know buy it (and in particular the Bayswater, which comes in about 12 shades of “go-with-anything” brown/black/navy before you even start looking at custom colours) because they think that this will be a staple that they can carry for the next 10 years without feeling that they are now officially behind the times. I’m not sure that such a bag actually exists but I see an awful lot of them around the City.

  4. I personally think the Hermes clutch is fairly ugly, my opinion of course.

Also Hermes have managed to pull the wool over the consumers eyes for too long, it is overated for what you are paying for, the prices they charge are ridiculous.

They as a brand were in fact exposed some years ago of using the marketing tactic of having a ‘waiting list’ for so called hard to get bags, when in fact you could indeed obtain one immediately if you knew how to do so – and no you didn’t need to be a celebrity, dignitary to do so. Article is available should it be of interest to anyone.

I don’t fault the quality or design of their bags and yes they have some beautiful bags, I just think as a company they are incredibly greedy, and I think to compare Mulberry to Hermes in the way it has been done on this blog just goes to show, how many people have fallen for the marketing tricks of the trade. Then again that’s what keeps advertisers in business and the consumers buying.

My advice, be savvy, make your own decisions based on your own experiences with a brand and don’t always believe what you are told by the marketers.
