I love attending runway shows and am not afraid to show my excitement, I heard that there is a “no expression” rule with fashion editors at Vogue (no idea why, so people don’t think you’re actually like, having a good time?) but I am just not that cool. I get excited and want to ooohhh and aaahhhh over everything, I know- such an amateur! Anyway, going backstage before a show is just as fun– you get to see all the action up close and play with the clothes/bags/shoes before they hit the runway!
We were invited backstage to the Derek Lam show and even though it was raining cats and dogs, we got there because nothing was going to stop us that day! We watched as design assistants ran around tagging last minute items, photographers stepping over each other to get their shots, and of course, Derek himself giving an interview.
We went through each look carefully and snapped photos of what we found interesting. (Jump for more!)
This bag caught our eye and I wanted to take it out of the plastic but didn’t want to be chased out of there as the show was about to start. It’s a chic oversized clutch with chains.
The shoes– kind of fabulous huh? I just don’t know how comfortable they are. My back hurt looking at them actually. And all those straps, feels like they’d slip off and I’d end up pulling at them all night long. Again, had an urge to put those on but did not want to risk getting in trouble.
This is why supermodels are necessary, what looked like a boring housecoat on the hanger was transformed to a glamorous shift dress on Jessica Stam. I was not impressed with this backstage but then I saw it on the runway and Wow!
Derek’s palette was mostly nude with splashes of orange, mustard and navy. It was more subdued than I had expected after seeing so much color in other shows. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. It was a soothing and relaxed collection, one that I can actually wear and be comfortably chic in.
Okay, not sure how I feel about jumpsuits but this soft black silk jersey one is at least flattering, I’d wear it with my slim leather cinched belt. Love the draped neckline of the yellow dress– with the narrow skirt is gives the illusion of a very slim figure. A sequined off the shoulder dress should be in every girl’s wardrobe, what’s more sensuous than a bare shoulder? I am looking forward to Derek’s collection hitting the stores!

Very much a fan of Derek Lam too!
Very clean lines and love the whole uncluttered look! Minimalist but not overly minimal.
Love Derek Lam! But those shoes are too done up for my taste. The little dresses are divine!
I was backstage at the Derek Lam show as well! I actually saw you Tina – you were wearing the most to-die-for outfit and gorgeous heels (CL’s?)
was loving the soft colors in his spring line as well 🙂
funny! Your enthusiasm is what is so refreshing about your perspective!
