Snob or Slob: Lanvin Leopard Draped Frame Bag

lanvinleopard.jpg

A few of you brought up the subject of animal print bags and were indignant at the use of pony skin in bags lately. So I can’t wait to read your thoughts on a Leopard print bag made of pony skin! I am not a leopard girl and have always thought it a bit tawdry but lately am pining for a lippi cat short swing coat–shhhh, don’t tell the activists! But leopard bags? Like the Lanvin Draped Frame bag above made of Pony hair in leopard print– I would never carry this. I might stick it in my office for a bit of naughty retro glam on my chaise as a pillow though. $2,950 at Barneys.com But what do you snobbers think? Snob or Slob?

  1. I think it is disgraceful in the first place to use pony hair and just as crazy to dye it to look as if it were leopard. I think Dolce etc, has used this for ages. Maybe that is why I always skip their ads.Is it the men who wish their women to dress in these costumes, so that they can imagine themselves as great hunters??

  2. Ha Ha mette love the last comment….must say I have a pair of loubies in a fur print and adore them think they look chic with a LBD with a nauty touch…think you have to be careful thought as some of it can look cheap and tacky! Don’t think i buy a bag in the print a bit too much!

For all your british bag snobs you don’t want to end up looking like Pat Butcher from Eastenders!!!

  3. As a tried and true lover of “well-done” leopard prints, I would NEVER purchase anything made from a horse. I am always conflicted even when it comes to cow/goat/pig/sheep skins. No exotics for me either. As well, I would never pay almost 3 Gs for this bag! Tina, please research a faux alternative to your leopard print coat 🙂 Do love Lanvin though. Bought the ‘Happy’ bag in white (thanks to the Bag Snobs recommendation!) and love it!

  4. Lol Lottie, Pat Butcher is definitely not a good look! Ha ha.

This is totally slob, horrible. Personally, I couldn’t care less about using pony hair. If I can wear/use/eat leather, croc, ostrich etc why should I place a horse above those other animals?

  5. Ponys have a special place in my heart though! I don’t aesthetically like pony hair bags, but definitely love ostrich like the BV that Tina and Kelly posted last week or so.

I can’t stand leopard. I applaud anyone who can make it seem classy, but to me it has always screamed cheap and tacky. and despite how much I love lanvin, not even this brand can save it imo.

  6. There are a few things.

Leopard print isn’t my favorite print because it – unfortunately – comes and goes, and is often used by cheap clothes manufacturers to add zing to apparel, before people know it they’re looking at polyester leopard print boob tubes, pants, etc, so it’s come to be synonymous with ‘cheap’.

The other, one thing that makes me impatient (with designers) is how they use their name to sell items (and high prices) even though the items look tawdry, or resemble like they’ve been put together by an amateur designer. This may be Lanvin, sure enough, but it isn’t aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

That being said, this bad isn’t as bad as Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton (any bag), particularly his $75,000 anniversary bag, but it isn’t something that I’d expect a designer of that caliber to release. Lastly, I always suspect that these bags don’t really cost that much to put together, probably less than five hundred dollars, maybe even less than two hundred dollars, but the name adds a few thousand to the retail price.

  7. re: the pony skin issue. It’s a personal choice I guess. I have issues with snake skin (after handling a live snake). On bags, the texture feels strange/weird to me, so I think the texture of snake skin is better on a live snake. Snake skin on bags makes my blood run cold (the same feeling I get when people run fingernails down a black board). I don’t know why, and the thing is, I like snake skin visually. I think it looks great.

  8. I don’t mean to correct you Tina, but when something is made out of Pony skin it really is made out of Calf’s hair. They don’t slaughter ponies for their skin, so rest assured that the pony skin handbags and shoes are really made out of calf’s hair.

    Hi Kay,

Yes! I am aware that calf hair is often used and called pony skin because I have a Prada coat that says “calf hair” on the tag but they called it pony skin at the boutique. Where I got confused was when Mette and Katey started accusing it as actual pony skin! I had put in a call to the designer to clarify and am waiting to hear back.

From my understanding, pony skin is sometimes used (in Europe they eat horse and pony steaks and the skin is a by product) but it would cost $12,000 for a pony skin bag, not just a few thousand.

  9. Oh, Tina, how did you find this? Animal print pony hair? It’s that thong all over again.

Right, well, even given that pony hair is just a term for calf hair, as Kay says, still not digging it. I’m a child of the eighties, and the whole vehement anti-fur movement. I can’t get over it, I will just never be into fur. Probably ever, even if it only comes from a cow. As for the print…

Actually, I might wear the print once in a blue moon, with a black vintage shirt dress, black bangles and a pair of red patent pumps. But that’s maybe once a year (if that), and you’d have to wear your hair up to keep it from getting too “wild child.”

And the price tag? STFU, as if. Never would I pay that much for something this tack, not when I could easily run to a Target, H&M or Hot Topic to find something that looks the same minus the creepy animal feel. :/ Not that I shop at Hot Topic, mind you, but I could.

  10. i love leopard print; i have ever since i was little! leopard print bedding in satin (haha), leopard print pjs, cutsey totes, but this bag is sloppy. period.

it looks like a cheap decor pillow.

  11. Tina,

I got the chicest, most fabulous Lippi Cat coat from Pologeorgis Furs a few years back. It’s tres chic! I get a million compliments on it…

  12. Tina and Kelly,

Today my SA, Wendy, at Oscar de la Renta, Manhasset sold me the gorgeous to die for Goya bag that was featured in your contest. I was so bummed that I didn’t win the contest, but have to admit that Liza’s response was wonderful. It killed me to shell out the dinero, but in person, the bag was even more beautiful and I had to have it.

I hope there are more contests to come…

    Kay

  13. Tina, I don’t think I ever posted that I believed it was actually hair from a pony, did I? I mean, I just assumed it was a suede like thing. Lots of other people jumped on that band wagon, though.

Still, I plead not guilty for THAT offense, at least. :/

Pony hair and pony skin ARE the same thing though, right?
