Gucci Babouska Bag: Snob or Slob?

BGV06VG_mn.jpgOne can always count on Gucci to entertain and amuse, even when they are not trying to. This bag, aptly named the “Babouska” (what chance does the bag have with such a heinous name? Which makes me wonder,,, “Would a rose smell as sweet if given another name?”) is an ode to the frightful fringe trend that has taken over Fall 2008 bags. This one is particularly strange because the fringe is only in two strips like long beards via ZZ Top (if you don’t know who that is, consider yourself lucky). Throw on a nose ring and multiple earrings, and the transformation is complete. I may be wrong here but I think you can come up with better things to waste your two grand on. $1,995 at Saks.comWhat do you guys think? Snob or Slob?

  1. Now really,who would want a bag as awful as this? I don´t think that even the ones who make replicas would copy this model. I have nothing more to say.

  2. Seriously,this is one hideous bag,I really don’t get why they have called it Babouska,which mean old woman/grandmother in Russian, hardly reminds me of an old woman’s handbag,well,maybe one that’s into some hardcore stuff!

  4. Tina, putting “Gucci is irrelevant” as one of your choices? Quel horreur!!!! I love Frida and her take on menswear, and her Fall 2008 bags for men are wonderful!!! Especially the tote/messenger bag of which i think a smaller version was shown on the women’s runway. Yes, I know this is a blog devoted mostly to women’s bags but just had to throw in my two cents.

    In the world of women’s handbags, Gucci is no longer relevant… sorry to burst the bubble :(. It’s been years since they produced a bag worthy of our attention.

    That said, Frida for Gucci has done some great pieces for Women’s ready to wear which we will cover in couture snob.

  6. Well, I am obviously going to be in the minority here, and I guess I don’t have as good of taste as the rest of you, but I like these bags. They are different, and I think the fringe and stud details are fun and an interesting contrast with the more traditional Gucci canvas print and shape. I especially like the large shoulder hobo one. I guess the good news is if everyone hates it I’ll be able to catch it on sale…………

  7. I think the bag featured is an unfortunate slob!!Check Gucci’s web and you will find MANY bags just as hideous. I’m going to use a word coined by the HGTV latest Design Star castoff,”T aragic”(for tragic). What were they thinking?

  8. I agree that the bag is hideous, and that Gucci is irrelevant. I associate it now with rap artists and their imitators wearing tacky Gucci logo track suits with matching sneakers and hats. Bleh.

    But, why the unnecessary dig at ZZ Top? When I was a college student and working at Starbucks Billy Gibbons was one of my regular customers, and a kinder man I’ve never met. Plus, it’s ZZ Top … you might as well insult the Texas flag. Or bluebonnets.

    ditto! i love frida’s rtw for men. and some of the bags are HAWT! i’m not sure if you checked out the spring 09 bags yet, but there is a black python bag with fringe that looks like a hobo, but it’s in the men’s department so it’s up for grabs!!! as far as the fall 08 bags are concerned, i love this brown croc with gold detailing. unfortunately, i’m still a student and can’t afford any of the aforementioned bags, but i am on the waitlist for this bag.

  14. Lose the fringe and the studs and the bag wouldn’t be that bad. The basic shape is actually pretty nice but is sadly hidden under all the other crap.
