Wow– turns out the “exclusive” Nina Ricci dress worn by SJP to the premiere of Sex and the City in NYC wasn’t so exclusive after all. According to the NY times blog, On the Runway, Parker was led to believe by both Nina Ricci designer Olivier Theyskens and President Mario Grauso that the dress had not been worn before. SJP was upset because she remarked to Theyskens during the fitting that she was surprised the dress hadn’t been worn before. He assured her it hadn’t.
“He didn’t say, ‘Well, actually I just escorted Lauren down the red carpet at the Met.’ ” said Parker, adding, “I just wish it had been handled differently and they had been straight about it.” (Jump to vote!)
Ouch– perhaps he meant no other actress had worn it to a premiere? As SJP further remarks, “In the big picture, this is not important, but there is a relationship between the entertainment industry and fashion,” she said on Thursday evening, adding. “We’ve watched sales dwindle and we’ve watched people be less inclined to spend money on clothes.”
I have a feeling she is wishing she took Chanel’s offer of a gown plus a $200,000 sponsorship right about now. But there is a small chance that the Nina Ricci camp did not consider sociaite Lauren Davis Santo Domingo as “someone” who is competition for SJP. What do you think, was she or wasn’t she duped? Yes. Utterly ridiculous. They’ve got a lot of nerve. Their prices are entirely inflated — and I’ve bought a few of their pieces. In this economy, it’s clearly a brand in jeopardy and in need of all the friends and free promo they can get.
I like SJP’s perspective. In the scheme of life, it’s not biggie, but it’s a clear foul.

Nope, I don’t buy that. Anyone that reads Vogue or gives a hoot about who wore what at the Met gala knows exactly who Lauren Davis Santo Domingo is.
I think she should have gone with Chanel.

Sarah looked amazing, but still… Nina Ricci should have been upfront about the dress. With the avalanche of SATC publicity, I would have expected them to come out with an entirely exclusive dress for SJP.
Chanel has dressed SJP beautifully in the past, that pale pink, rosette Chanel frock worn to the Oscars a few years ago comes to mind.
I tried to report the facts in all fairness to both parties but it’s so obvious they wanted her to wear the dress and would say anything at the time to woo her.
Even now, they are benefiting from the bad press.
Advice to SJP- stick with Chanel and Oscar de la Renta, girl!
I just read “Celebutantes” a few months ago and the entire book is about getting celebs to wear designer gowns on the red carpet and the lengths (and lies) designers will go to make it happen. Olivier made two dresses for Lauren Davis’s wedding, which was featured in Vogue recently, not to mention that dress has been in a few editorials. It’s strange he was not completely honest with Sarah Jessica Parker, but really, she looked absolutely amazing.
She was totally duped. I think what is so sad to me is how disrespectful the whole issue is. Cathy brings up the point about how that premiere is a high point in SJP’s life. They may not have thought of Lauren Davis as being big enough to matter or count as “wearing it,” but they had to have known that with the internet now, pictures from the MET ball go around the world within seconds. They duped Sarah Jessica. She should have had a one of a kind ensemble for that night. Hopefully at the sequel’s premiere, she’ll be wearing Chanel.

BTW Lindsay Lohan was shot in this dress for a story in Harper’s or Elle a few months ago. This dress had been worn and photographed twice.
There are many levels of deception, while this may not be an outward lie from the perspective of Nina Ricci, it is neither a truthful answer to SJP’s question. It’s rather disappointing that a brand has to go through those lengths for marketing, rather than let their products speak for themselves.

I feel sorry for SJP but it has been done before and on far more important occasions,the Oscars for example. Fashion world is ruthless,everyone knows that,read ‘Fashion Babylon’ by Imogen Jones-outrageous stuff.
On the bright side,SJ looked stunning,so much better than Lauren who I find a very plain figure.

What’s wrong, didn’t he recognise his own design. I did think it was quite odd SJP was wearing this dress because, I love it and it’s beautiful, but I’ve seen it in at least one shoot (definetly on Victoria Beckham in April’s UK vogue, and I think it was also on a model in a spring UK harpers…). I can’t believe that SJP choose a dress not made specially for her!

sooo duped..too bad lauren looked better and anyways…linsday lohan also wore this dress in a magazine shoot…i think it was the superheros shoot for harper’s bazaar,wasnt that the theme of this year’s met too?…and lohan’s pictures were ALL over the internet not to mention in millions of magazines sold…most definitely “competition” for sjp. boo on nina ricci, did they think she wouldnt find out??
She should have actually paid for the dress then she would have been more likely to have one that had not been seen out and about before.
Still, I bet there are loads that won’t ask to be sent clothes by Ricci for the next big do.

Fess up and say “hey we’re sorry”, but they come off sounding so smug and petty. If Lauren was photographed in it than it’s been seen, by 1 or 100. But the real kicker is that it was modeled in a national magazine by Lindsey Lohan for the super heros layout.

I can’t believe the Nina Ricci camp treated Sarah Jessica Parker like that. I agree with Bobbi, above – Sarah deserved an exclusive dress, and it is unacceptable that Nina Ricci would treat the Sex and the City’s star actress (and most fashion-obsessed character) to sloppy seconds – much less THIRDS?! Outrageous.
I won’t be purchasing ANY of her line, if that’s how she does business, if that’s how she treats an amazing actress as Sarah Jessica Parker, and if that’s how she esteems the star at the premiere of her movie, which lives, breathes, and creates fashion in its own right.
