With so many women carrying babies later in life, amnios have been on the rise. We all know they are strongly recommended for expecting women over 35 because of the increased risk of having babies with genetic disorders or chromosomal problems. And, we all know this procedure is accompanied by the chance of causing a miscarriage. The statistics are estimated between one and 200 to one and 400. With that much knowledge, would you choose to do an elective amnio if you are under 35?
I know some expecting parents (both under 35) who have had this procedure “just to know” if anything is wrong with the baby. These people have no family history of genetic disorders or chromosomal issues. All have had perfectly healthy children before (all with amnios). I see it as their way of selective reproduction. I believe if they discovered the fetus had an abnormality they would choose to end the pregnancy. They say, “We just want to be prepared.” I can understand wanting to be prepared but with no history to cause concern why risk a miscarriage. So, if you found out your child has Down syndrome, do you think that justifies termination? I believe that if you choose to start a family you are prepared to love a child no matter what life may bring. Mom Snobs, what do you think?
